Sr. Claims Counsel
Zurich is currently looking for a Claims Counsel to work out of our Jersey City, NJ office.
The Claims Counsel will under limited supervision handle private company Director and Officer (D&O) liability EPL and Fiduciary claims of moderate to high value and complexity. The ideal candidate will have experience reviewing matters for coverage, issuing coverage letters, determining exposure, and setting appropriate reserves. You will manage claims through resolution and in accordance with Zurich’s best practices and within authority limits. In this role, you will have the opportunity to regularly communicate with customers, brokers and defense counsels, and may be dedicated to handle single and/or multi-party claims and/or claims for specific accounts.
Additional responsibilities include:
Analyze coverage, liability and damages
Participate in mediations and negotiating settlements
Draft reservation of rights and coverage denial letters
Notify Underwriter of claim issues
Draft case summary reports in connection with significant reserve increases and trial preparation
Direct activities of defense counsel
Juris Doctor and 5 or more years of experience in the Claims or Litigation areaOR
Bachelors Degree and 6 or more years of experience in the Claims or Litigation areaOR
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 8 or more years of experience in the Claims or Litigation areaOR
Zurich approved Apprenticeship program including an Associate Degree and 6 or more years of experience in the Claims Handling area within the Insurance industryAND
Must obtain and maintain required adjuster license(s)
Knowledge of the insurance industry, claims and the insurance legal and regulatory environment
Customer service experience
Microsoft Office experience
Juris Doctorate (J.D.) with insurance defense experience, particularly private company D&O experience
AIC, SCLA and/or CPCU designation
Strong communication, presentation and negotiation skills
Strong organizational and time management skills and ability to multi task and adapt to a fast-paced, ever changing environment
Strong analytical skills, judgment, decision making and problem solving skills
Ability to effectively present information to manager, customers and external business partners and prepare and present internal reports
Ability to work independently
Effectively collaborate cross functionally as well as develop partnerships internally and externally
