Job Summary

Zurich North America is looking for an Actuary to support ourgrowing Accident, Health, & Travel line of business. This role isopen due to growth and an accelerated growth plan. This role can be basedin either our North American H.Q. is Schaumburg, Illinois or our East Coastregional office in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Key Accountabilities

Under minimal supervision, support the pricing of new/renewalbusiness anddevelopment of effective premium/rating structures for:

  • Group Accident products such as AD&D, Business TravelAccident, Student/Participating Accident and Truckers Accident

  • Group Health products such as Employer Stop Loss and Medical/HMOExcess

  • Voluntary Products such as Critical Illness and In-HospitalIndemnity

  • Leisure and Student Travel Insurance

  • The actuary will eventually lead the pricing of the some of theabove products.

This key role will also manage profit margins on new and renewalbusiness and assist in the monitoring of portfolio performance. The Actuary will also:

  • Review, coordinate, prepare and perform actuarial analysesincluding trend analyses, reinsurance analyses and analyses of loss and expensereserves, as it relates to pricing adequacy and strategic direction.

  • Provide consultation and technical expertise on actuarial modelsand risk issues, and support Market Facing and Product Underwriting on pricingdecisions.

  • Prepare premium rate filings, trend studies, rate adequacyanalyses, schedules of statistics/statistical analyses, and financialstatements.

  • Drive the design, testing and maintenance of pricing models andtools.

Business Accountabilities

  • Provide professional actuarial support and advice to actuarialbusiness partners including insights into underlying performance andimplications for the business.

  • Analyze data and undertake complex modeling using establishedmethodologies to quantify risk and support business decision making. Performmore complex analyses as assigned under the supervision of a more experiencedactuary.

  • Contribute to Virtuous Circle and Zurich ProfitabilityReview/performance assessment discussions by providing insights from own areain order to promote cross-functional sharing of information.

  • Ensure that processes and standards are consistent with internalZurich actuarial policies and guidance and, where relevant, compliant withregulations; lead the implementation of systems and process improvements in ownarea.

  • Assist in the development of risk based capital models as well asparameterization and allocation activities to support actuarial services.

  • Proactively identify professional development and mentoringopportunities for less experienced actuarial staff in order to promote careerprogression and maintain the talent pipeline.

Job Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics/Statistics or Actuarial Sciencesand 5 or more years of experience in the Actuarial area


  • ASA

Preferred Qualifications:

  • FSA

  • Technical knowledge and skills reflective of a practitioner whohas progressed within actuarial positions of increasing responsibility

  • Experience in multiple functional areas (pricing, reserving,capital management) and in multiple business units

Holds an actuarial qualification and, acting in an actuarialcapacity, performs routine reserving or pricing tasks as assigned requiringminimal direct supervision, and performs more complex analyses under thesupervision of more senior actuaries, all for the purpose of evaluating lossreserves or pricing business. Assists in the training of less experiencedpersonnel.

Client Internally Focused - The job’s core deliverables rely ondelivering service to internal clients, usually at the line manager or employeelevel. May involve sharing subject matter expertise to others in theorganization or supporting others in their efforts to deliver on our promise.
