Zurich Insurance is currently looking for a Senior Market Facing Underwriter on our Accident and Health team in our Chicago office. We are looking for someone with excellent market facing and technical skills that has experience working with Brokers. Expertise in underwriting Auto Physical Damage coverages is also preferred for this role.

This position would be an addition to our staff to lead the roll out of our new Physical Damage (PD) and Non-Trucking Liability (NTL) products. That rollout would include the following responsibilities:

  • Developing Underwriting Guidelines, Appetite Guides, and supporting documents for PD/NTL products

  • Working with internal stakeholders to lead roll out of operational framework supporting product requirements

  • Work with actuarial and technical underwriting support to develop target pricing framework

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders and brokers to identify and address product deficiencies in order to ultimately offer best in class product in the marketplace

  • As the team’s Subject Matter Expert, train the current staff on effectively marketing and underwriting PD /NTL coverages

  • Build and manage current (and new) select broker relationships

  • Collaborate with Sales and Marketing to develop refreshed Value Proposition reflective of new product capabilities.

This position will include some Market Facing responsibilities during the roll out and those will become greater as the product gains traction. Ultimately, this role will be cross trained on underwriting Occupational Accident & Workers Compensation coverage, having responsibility for underwriting the entire product suite with specific Broker/Territory assignments (while still leading PD/NTL related initiatives). As such, this Market Facing Underwriter is responsible for:

  • Underwriting and analyzing new and renewal Occupational Accident, Physical Damage, Non Trucking Liability, and Workers Compensation lines of business

  • Proactively seek renewal and new account opportunities

  • Qualify accounts to meet with the organization's appetite, balanced with sound business opportunity

  • Negotiate Terms & Conditions and close deals

  • Cross-Sell other lines of business to increase product density with the account

  • Make agent/broker/customer and on-sight calls with a planned and well-prepared purpose

  • Participate in Sales Team meeting as related to assigned brokers and/or territory

  • Develop strong broker and client networks as related to industries underwritten by Business Unit

  • Assist in coaching and developing staff

  • Develop, maintain and handle referrals within the Profit Center

  • Driving our market management strategy

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 5 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing areaOR

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 10 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support areaOR

  • Zurich approved Apprenticeship program including an Associate Degree and 3 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing areaOR

  • Zurich approved Apprenticeship program including an Associate Degree and 8 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support areaAND

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office

  • Experience working on time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business

  • Experience working in a team environment

  • Experience Underwriting Auto Physical Damage

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Understanding of Owner Operator/Independent Contractor Insurance coverages and business model

  • Trucking Broker Relationships

  • Ability to effectively assess risk

  • Strong negotiation skills

  • Superior skills in relationship building, active listening, needs analysis, and win-win negotiation

  • Possess a high level of customer service by meeting or exceeding broker and or customer expectations with respect to required deadlines

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Strong knowledge of underwriting philosophy, techniques, national/local filing regulations and guidelines
