Market Facing Underwriting Manager, Accident & Health
Zurich Accident & Health is currently looking for a Market Facing Underwriting Manager to manage the Midwest, South and West regions for its Group Accident segment.
Group Accident offers a portfolio of products designed to help protect against financial hardship resulting from accidental death, accidental injury, unexpected illness and/or trip cancellation/travel inconvenience, including Basic AD&D, Voluntary AD&D, Business Travel Accident, Student Accident, Participant Accident, Personal Accident, Critical Illness, Student Travel and Leisure Travel.
The preferred work location for this position is Zurich’s Chicago office; other locations may be considered.
This is a highly technical and market facing position that requires experience with Group Accident lines of business, strong communication and leadership skills and the ability to drive profitable growth.
With a growing team, this position would support 5-8 Market Facing Underwriters handling the mentioned regions of the United States.
Our Market Facing Underwriting Manager is responsible for:
The management, evaluation, professional development, training and coaching of a team of 5-8 market facing underwriters.
Influencing and driving accountability for the identification of new growth opportunities with key distributors for areas of responsibility.
Ensuring that accounts are qualified, and meet with the organization's appetite, balanced with sound business opportunity.
Along with underwriters in areas supervised, make broker/customer and on-sight calls with a planned and well-prepared purpose.
Coaching and supporting the negotiation of Terms & Conditions and deal closures.
Ensuring cross-sell within areas of responsibility to increase product density with accounts.
Providing continuous coaching on pipeline management and sales best practices.
Monitoring Sales Funnel and Production Metrics of the team.
Identifying market trends and exposures that may impact business results.
Supporting development and maintenance of customer and broker relationships to achieve profitable growth, market share, product mix, new business and account retention.
Driving profitability and productivity by continually analyzing new business, retention, risk selection, pricing/rate, loss ratio, expense ratio, distribution and product mix within areas of responsibility
Building productive internal relationships with support service partners.
Establishing objectives and setting priorities for direct reports. Assessing the performance of direct reports on a regular basis and implementing development plans.
Executing a people management strategy to optimize staff development and retention and manage performance of team members, including ensuring team members comply with company policies and expectations and take appropriate action.
Providing regular, actionable coaching and feedback to employees to review progress, recognize accomplishments, support development and/or improve performance.
Regularly engaging with Group Accident, A&H and other Zurich senior management to contribute to, report on, drive and cascade organizational strategies, messaging and results.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent and 7 or more years of experience in an Underwriting or Market Facing role within the Commercial Insurance industry
- High School Diploma or Equivalent and 14 or more years of experience in a Claims or Underwriting Support role within the Commercial Insurance industry
- Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 5 or more years of experience in an Underwriting or Market Facing role within the Commercial Insurance industry
- Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 12 or more years of experience in a Claims or Underwriting Support role within the Commercial Insurance industry
- 2 Years of management experience
Advanced knowledge of Group Accident Lines Of Business
Ability to manage and build rapport with team
Excellent organizational, written, oral communication and presentation skills
Advanced knowledge of the insurance industry and the legal and regulatory guidelines
Established Producer relationships
Advanced skills in relationship building, active listening, needs analysis, and win-win negotiating
Strong presentation skills and a solutions and service orientation
Demonstrates the ability to influence and drive successful/needed outcomes at both the transaction and strategic/operational priority levels.
